Know what counts
Oil-based and alkyd paint, stain, varnish, shellac, polyurethane, paint thinner, and mineral spirits are all in this category. So is the solvent you cleaned the brushes with.
Keep everything in its original labelled container
Unlabelled containers get refused, or surcharged as unknown waste because the site has to pay to identify them. Don't decant into a milk jug.
Don't consolidate different products
Mixing thinner into leftover stain creates a container nobody can characterise, which is the most expensive thing to hand a hazardous waste facility.
Deal with the rags before they deal with you
Rags soaked in oil-based finish generate heat as they cure and have started house fires in a wadded pile. Lay them flat outdoors on a non-flammable surface until they are fully dry and hard, or keep them submerged in a sealed metal can of water until you hand them over.
Check the per-visit cap before you load the car
Caps vary by program and are usually stated in two ways: a per-container maximum, commonly five gallons, and a per-visit total, often around fifteen gallons or a hundred-odd pounds. Read your own site's number before a garage clear-out, because the difference is a second trip.

How it works in Charlotte
Hazardous waste in NC — never goes in the trash, regardless of dryness. Drop off free at any of the 4 Mecklenburg Full-Service Recycling Centers (combined 100-lb residential limit with latex). Keep in original labeled container; never mix with other chemicals. Businesses must use the Small Business HW Event (336-855-7925, appointment) or a private hazardous-waste contractor.
Local rules
- PaintCare does NOT operate in North Carolina. Latex and oil-based paint are handled through county HHW programs, not a producer-funded stewardship program.

- Mecklenburg also operates five smaller self-service centers that accept only the standard 6 curbside materials — no HHW, electronics, or paint at those.

- NC G.S. 130A-309.10 — statewide landfill ban (effective July 1, 2011) on televisions, computers, monitors, printers, scanners, fax/copy devices, and computer peripherals (except keyboards and mice). Curbside trash crews will not collect TVs or computers.
- NC G.S. 130A-309.10(f), as amended by SL 2023-137 — lithium-ion battery landfill and incinerator ban statewide, effective December 1, 2026.
- NC statewide bans also in effect: used motor oil, motor-vehicle oil filters, antifreeze, aluminum cans, plastic bottles (all under G.S. 130A-309.10). Fluorescent lights banned from C&D landfills; photovoltaic modules banned in C&D effective Dec 1, 2026.
- Mecklenburg County Source Separation Ordinance — businesses generating 16+ cubic yards of trash per week AND more than 500 lb/month of corrugated cardboard and/or 500 lb/month of office paper must source-separate and recycle those materials. Roughly 4,900 businesses are covered.
- NC G.S. 130A-309.70 prohibits disposal of lead-acid batteries in landfills, incinerators, or waste-to-energy facilities; retailers selling lead-acid batteries must accept used ones for recycling.
