Latex Paint Disposal in Charlotte
Before you go
In most of the country, dried latex is ordinary trash and the hazardous waste program does not need to take it. Two things change that, and both are decided by your state: California prohibits drying it at home, and thirteen states run a PaintCare take-back that is free and easier than drying. The local rules on this page say which applies where you are.
Confirm it's actually latex
The label will say latex, acrylic, or water-based, and it'll tell you to clean up with soap and water. If it says alkyd, mineral spirits, or clean up with thinner, it's oil-based and none of this applies.
Check your state before you dry anything
California treats leftover latex paint as hazardous waste and does not allow you to dry it out at home; it has to go to a collection site. Where PaintCare operates, drop-off is free and drying is pointless. Everywhere else, drying and binning it is the normal route. This page's local rules and the facilities listed above tell you which of the three you are in, and your municipal program page is the final authority.
Dry it solid before it goes anywhere
Where drying is allowed: stir in cat litter, sawdust, or a commercial paint hardener at roughly equal parts for a half-full can. A can with less than an inch left will dry on its own with the lid off in a few days.
Dry it somewhere ventilated and out of reach
Open air, away from children and pets. A garage floor or a back step is right; a closed cupboard is not.
Leave the lid off when you set it out
The hauler needs to see that it's solid. A sealed can gets left at the curb, and in most places a liquid can is refused outright.
Never pour it down a drain or onto the ground
Latex is water-based but it is not water. It fouls septic systems, coats sewer lines, and in a storm drain it goes straight to a creek untreated.
Consider giving away what's usable
A mostly full can of a current colour is worth more to a neighbour, a theatre group, or a habitat resale store than it is dried out in a landfill.

How it works in Charlotte
Accepted free at all 4 Mecklenburg Full-Service Recycling Centers (up to 100 lb of paint per resident, original labeled containers, no leaks). Alternatively, NC allows fully dried latex paint to be placed in regular trash — mix with kitty litter, sand, or sawdust to a stiff/oatmeal consistency, let cure, then put out for curbside trash with the lid off. Businesses with latex paint should email SolidWaste@MeckNC.gov.

- PaintCare does NOT operate in North Carolina. Latex and oil-based paint are handled through county HHW programs, not a producer-funded stewardship program.
Worth knowing
- Mecklenburg also operates five smaller self-service centers that accept only the standard 6 curbside materials — no HHW, electronics, or paint at those.
- Curbside trash crews in Charlotte will not pick up TVs, computers, paint cans, or batteries.
- PaintCare does not operate in NC, making Charlotte reliant solely on county HHW — unlike cities in PaintCare states (CO, OR, CA) where 200+ retail drop-off sites supplement municipal programs.

- NC G.S. 130A-309.10 — statewide landfill ban (effective July 1, 2011) on televisions, computers, monitors, printers, scanners, fax/copy devices, and computer peripherals (except keyboards and mice). Curbside trash crews will not collect TVs or computers.
- NC G.S. 130A-309.10(f), as amended by SL 2023-137 — lithium-ion battery landfill and incinerator ban statewide, effective December 1, 2026.
- NC statewide bans also in effect: used motor oil, motor-vehicle oil filters, antifreeze, aluminum cans, plastic bottles (all under G.S. 130A-309.10). Fluorescent lights banned from C&D landfills; photovoltaic modules banned in C&D effective Dec 1, 2026.
